Brief Introduction to Environmental Protection Work at Tsung Chung School, Shau Kei Wan

Our school has always emphasized teaching students to have correct environmental awareness from an early age and to practice environmental protection. In addition to having environmental ambassadors on campus to promote environmental protection work, we have also formulated some energy-saving rules. To enhance students' environmental awareness, the school conducts the following activities every year.
1. Aluminum can recycling program
Last year, the school collected 1,667 aluminum cans during the aluminum can recycling event, which raised 100 yuan and was donated to the environmental protection organization, Changchun Society. This year's recycling competition will be held in June.

2. Clothing recycling activities
The school holds a clothing recycling event every year, where students donate their old clothes to environmental groups through the school.
3. School uniform recycling program
Students are encouraged to donate their old school uniforms to classmates from underprivileged backgrounds to reduce waste.
4. Environmental Ambassador Training
Each class selects an environmental ambassador to collect waste paper from each class for recycling.

Introduction to Sky Garden Environmental Protection Equipment

In 2008, the school successfully applied for a total of $344,200 from the Environmental and Nature Conservation Fund (ECF) and the Environmental Protection Campaign Committee (ECC) to construct various environmental protection facilities and promote environmental education on campus. This included applying a heat-insulating coating to the windows of all classrooms and the auditorium, blocking 99% of ultraviolet light and 60% of infrared rays. This not only prevents harmful ultraviolet rays from harming students but also helps lower the indoor temperature by one to three degrees Celsius, reducing the electricity required for air conditioning. Furthermore, the heat-insulating coating allows for over 85% light transmittance, enabling teachers and students to use more sunlight for lighting instead of relying on fluorescent tubes in classrooms, thus reducing pollution to the environment.
In addition to the heat-insulating coating, the rooftop garden is also equipped with solar and wind power generation devices. Students can not only see pictures of these devices in books, but also visit the school's rooftop garden to observe them in person. The electricity generated is used for lighting and irrigation of the garden plants.

There are two wind turbines on the rooftop garden . The turbines will automatically adjust to the wind direction before they start generating electricity .

There are also four solar panels on the rooftop garden, which convert solar energy into electricity when sunlight shines and store it in batteries for backup.

The rooftop garden is equipped with a 100-liter water tank that collects rainwater using the skylight. The electricity generated from solar and wind power will then be used to irrigate the crops in the garden, thus providing them with a better growing environment.

The garden canopy is used to collect rainwater, and the school has built a water channel under the canopy to collect rainwater for irrigating plants.

Hanging Gardens Mural and Slogan Creation Competition

To further promote environmental protection messages to parents and students, the school held a mural design competition for the rooftop garden this year. The theme was the environmental protection equipment in the rooftop garden, and parents and students were invited to design together. The winning design will be made into a mosaic and installed on the wall. The competition was very successful, and here are some of the outstanding works.

Kindergarten visit

To promote environmental education, we host kindergarten teachers and students from the district to visit the environmental facilities in our rooftop garden every year, so that children can learn about the importance of environmental protection and raise their awareness of environmental protection.
